There is something special that you can capture in an original artwork that can remain elusive in a photograph. If possible, I like to meet with either the person commissioning the painting or, in the case of a portrait, both the sitter and the person who is commissioning the portrait. I find this is the best way to make a connection and create a painting with real depth and character. It is helpful to know the reasons behind painting, what they want to achieve and what qualities and mood they are hoping the picture will portray.
Everyone has a story and it is interesting to incorporate this into a painting, whether it's a landscape of a special place or a portrait of someone dear to them.
I work predominately in oils, but I can offer charcoal as well. If it's a portrait I tend to work to a life size reproduction of the face, however I can paint any size of portrait from head and shoulders through to three quarter length or to a full-length body study.
